Entire city on one water line, city manager vows "move forward quickly" to fix second line

McALESTER — Its a ticking time bomb.

With the entire city of McAlester running on just one water supply line - with no back up- for last four weeks, one city councilman said fixing the second line must be made a priority during Tuesdays meeting of the McAlester City Council.

City councilors met for a regular meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Ward 5 City Councilor Buddy Garvin discussed the issue during an discussion item he put on Tuesday’s agenda.

“We have a major problem if that one pipe goes down, Garvin said. “We have a hospital, businesses and all the people of McAlester depending on the one line. We needed it get it fixed in a quick manner.”

City Manager Pete Stasiak said he was looking at funding sources for the project and he said he wanted to make sure the council understood that other projects would have to be put on hold because of the costs.

Ward 6 City Councilor Sam Mason said the money can be found and the council knows where to find it.

“If we have emergency money, we need to fund this, Mason said.

“ I think members of this council know ways to fund this.”

After the discussion, Stasiak said he would make fixing the second pipeline a priority.

“Based on this discussion we will move forward quickly to get the funding sources and get back to the council immediately,” he said.

Stasiak said the cost could be upwards of $280,000 to repair broken line which runs under Lake Talawanda No. 2 and would require the entire lake to be drained.Contact Jeanne LeFlore at
