Leo “Jack” Utley, 96, died Oct. 16, 2013.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at Main & Oklahoma Church of Christ with Red Coleman officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 56 of Haskell. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Born Nov. 21, 1916, at home in Onapa, he was the son of T.C. “Babe” and Lillie Genova Utley. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He joined the United States Army in 1940 and served in the European Theatre. He participated in the invasion of Normandy and was wounded on July 4, 1944, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He served as a rifleman, machine gunner, ammunition transport driver and military policeman.
After his military service, he returned to his love of farming, but soon went to work at the United States Naval Ammunition Depot in Savanna until his retirement. He worked in the transportation department and maintained a perfect driving record throughout his career by having no accidents charged to him.
He was a member of the Main & Oklahoma Church of Christ for more than 50 years. He was active in the congregation programs and served as a deacon for many years taking care of the Bible school curriculum.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Utely, of the home, a son, George Henderson and wife, Lori, Arlington Texas; son, Jim Utley and wife, Sandra, Sherman Texas; daughter-in-law, Debbie Utley, of Edmond; grandchildren, George Henderson, Mark Henderson, Randy Henderson, James Utley, Jerry Utley, Karyn Utley Johnson and their spouses; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Wayne Sturgeon and Lonnie Sturgeon; sisters-in-law, Betty Utley, Faye Cunningham and Patsy Mayes, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; four brothers; one son, Robert Neil Utley, and a great grandson, Weston James Utley.
Pallbearers will be James Utley, Jerry Utley, Damon Johnson, Josiah Utley, Rod Lungstrom, Mark Henderson, Randy Henderson and George Henderson Jr.

McAlester District schools and Lakewood Christian Schools will be closed Monday due to adverse weather condtions, school officials say.
