Local non-profit receives $10,000 to help homeowners

McALESTER — A local non-profit organization that works to improve homes for local low-income residents received a $10,000 grant recently.

Rebuilding Together Kiamichi Country received a $10,000 grant from Lowe’s that will be used complete critical repairs and weatherization and energy-efficiency upgrades for local homeowners this fall, said Alan Barreca director of the organization.

Rebuilding Together is a Safe and Healthy Housing organization that provides critical repairs, accessibility modifications, fire prevention and energy efficient upgrades to low-income homes and community centers at no cost to service recipients, according to rebuildingtogether.com.

Barreca said next weekend the group is planning to replace roofs for two low-income McAlester homeowners.

“This will allow them to live in a safe, healthy and dry home,” Barreca said.

He said the $10,000 will go a long way because the manual labor is donated so the organization has very little overhead.

This past weekend the group worked on McAlester homes with young people from Southern Methodist University in Texas.

“The came at their own expense for a four day service program,”  he said.

Barreca said he really enjoys being able to help people in need.

“We recently installed heating and air-conditioning in the home of a veteran and his disabled child, they just couldn’t believe we did this for them,” he said.

Barreca said volunteers are needed.
