Kiowa Plant honored for ongoing commitment to safe operations

McALESTER — Employees at the Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station in Kiowa have been honored with the National Safety Council’s Perfect Record Award for achieving the best safety performance for the past year, with zero work-related injuries or illnesses resulting in time away from work (lost time).

Tenaska Kiamichi plant employees accumulated 257,300 safe working hours as of Dec. 31, 2012.

“Safety here goes beyond regulatory compliance; it’s part of our company culture,” said Plant Manager Robert Pope.

“The National Safety Council awards recognize our employees’ commitment to safety on the job — not only for themselves but for their coworkers and for our community.”

The Perfect Record Award recognizes companies that have completed at least 12 consecutive months without incurring a lost-time injury or illness.

Employees at Tenaska Kiamichi also qualified for the Occupational Excellence Achievement Award, which honors the plant for operating with a safety record equal to or better than 50 percent of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates within the industry for lost-time illnesses and injuries.

In 2012, employees at Tenaska Kiamichi worked 77,785 hours with zero work-related lost-time injuries or illnesses.

Fueled by clean-burning natural gas, the 1,220-megawatt Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station produces electricity for sale to Shell Energy North America (US), L.P., which in turn markets the power.

The plant is one of the largest taxpayers in Pittsburg County, contributing more than $17.2 million in property taxes since it began commercial operation in 2003. In 2012, the plant injected more than $4.4 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy, in addition to providing approximately 170 hours of volunteer service performed by employees and other annual contributions.
