Soup kitchen, tough times often bring out good people

McALESTER — Tough times often bring out good people.

Some of those good people are at McAlester First Christian Church where volunteers run a soup kitchen ministry that has helped feed the hungry for more than 20 years, according to volunteers.

On Tuesday, several people gathered in the fellowship hall at the church for a weekly food give-away and free lunch. While some filled plastic bags with apples, plums, bananas, squash, tomatoes and other items given away each week by the church, others gathered with family and friends and talked about recent events while they waited for the lunch to begin.

Along with lunch, volunteer Mary Bivin said the church gives away free bakery goods and produce that are donated.

On Tuesday, Bivin and volunteers Bonnie and Judy Wintery were busy in the kitchen preparing dessert to go with the weekly free lunch. Other volunteers assisted people as they gathered donated bread, cakes, cookies fruit and vegetables.

Volunteer Jeremy Norwood was helping to distribute the food.

“We ask them to take enough just for the week, so there will be enough for everyone.” Norwood said.

There is no charge for the lunch but donations are welcome.

The soup kitchen and food give-away is open to the public and is held every Tuesday at 11 a.m. Lunch is served at noon.

The church is at 300 E. Carl Albert Pkwy. For more information, call 918 423-1500.
