Fire department at scene of chemical spill

McALESTER — McAlester firemen responded to a chemical spill Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Eighth Street and Washington Avenue.

According to radio traffic, a ferric chloride spill occurred at around 12:45 p.m. Thursday. McAlester firemen were on the scene blocking traffic and an employee from Tony’s Gas & Chemical House, Inc. could be seen spreading lime powder in the roadway where the chemical had spilled.

According to dictionary.reference.com, ferric chloride, also known as iron trichloride or iron perchloride, is a black-brown water soluble solid and is used chiefly in engraving, for deodorizing sewage, as a mordant and in medicine as an astringent and styptic.

One local resident, David Long, said he accidentally drove through the chemical spill prior to the roads being blocked off and the ferric chloride took the paint off the bottom of his vehicle.

More information about the spill and how it occurred could not be determined by presstime Thursday.
