Krebs, McAlester, Alderson firefighters snuff propane fire

McALESTER — All their training paid off.

That’s according to area firefighters after they pulled together to douse a propane fire Friday at Yaffe Iron and Metal, along U.S. Highway 270 in Krebs.

Firefighters from Krebs, McAlester and Alderson responded to the blaze and were able to extinguish the fire with no injuries reported.

Krebs Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Durant said the fire originated in an area where some workers were using a cutting torch.

When firefighters arrived, some propane tanks were on fire, Durant said. The tanks were 100-gallon tanks used as a propane source for cutting torches, according to Durant.

“Fortunately, it was all contained,” Durant said of the fire.

Firefighters were able to make their initial efforts from a distance, using hoses from the trucks to shoot powerful streams of water at the blaze.

“We were able to apply water from a long distance away,”  said Durant.

Firefighters from two departments combined their efforts to create what they called a fog pattern, referring to spreading out the streams of water, so eventually firefighters were able to reach the propane tanks and turn the tanks off, cutting off the source of the blaze.

Durant said the firefighters’ procedures went well.

“That’s how they’re trained to do,” he said. “They all worked very well together.”

Having an adequate water supply on hand also helped in putting out the fire.

“The big thing was having the water to be able to do it,” said Durant.

McAlester Fire Department Lt. Danny Bennett also noted how well the firefighters worked together.

“It was a good team effort,” Bennett said. “We had a double fog pattern going.”

Firefighters from both the McAlester and Krebs fire departments helped set up the fog pattern.

“We had a couple of guys pulling hoses,” Bennett said.

Three units from the Krebs Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze, along with single units from the fire departments in McAlester and Alderson.
