McAlester Public Schools Board of Education

Monday, Board of Education's Regularly Scheduled meeting

McALESTER — There’s plenty of good news to be reported from Monday night’s regularly scheduled McAlester Board of Education meeting.

The McAlester High School Winter/Color guard seized first place in all state competitions, McAlester High School Color Guard Director Robyn Steidley was runner up to State Director of the Year and the MHS Mock trial team won fifth place out over 50 schools to compete at state.

The school board recognized these students for their achievements and applauded their efforts.

Emerson Elementary was the visiting school this month. Principal Debbie Forest stood and gave a Power Point production of what activities her school is participating in and gave recognition to members and organizations in the community who have helped with the development of school programs and provided resources. She mentioned Indian Education, First Christian Church and Pride In McAlester to name a few.

Business Manager and Treasurer for MPS Brent Grilliot reported the schools are deep into Fiscal 2013 and he projects the fiscal year will end strong with money to carry over.

“We are being very frugal with the tax payers money,” Grilliot said.

Superintendent of MPS Marsha Gore said Secondary Curriculum Coordinator Stephanie Holt received information about Advancement Via Individual Determination grant and with only four days and nights to write it she did so, submitted it and the grant was received for Puterbaugh.

Board of Education member John Browne commended Holt for being able to find grants such as these to benefit the school system.

The AVID is a college-readiness program that encourages students to pursue advanced coursework.

The McAlester Public Schools Board of Education meetings are open to the public and are held the second Monday of every month at 200 E. Adams Ave. at 6:30 p.m.
