Son of God set for Saturday free showing in McAlester

McALESTER — Because of the winter weather that hit the area last Sunday, The King’s House Church of McAlester has added another free showing of “Son of God” this weekend.

This weekend’s showing has two big differences, though.

One, the free community showing will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, where last weekend’s showing was held on a Sunday morning.

And two, no tickets will be required for the Saturday morning showing this weekend at the Cinema 69 Theatre in McAlester  — although there’s a limited amount of space available.

“We know there were a lot of people who weren’t able to be there because of the weather,” King’s House Associate Pastor Blake Jennings said, referring to last weekend’s showing of “Son of God.”

“We wanted to give them another opportunity.”

Even with the winter weather that hit the area last Sunday, there were still about 800 individuals who showed up to view “Son of God” last Sunday morning, Jennings said.

He and others at King’s House are hoping for an even larger turnout this Saturday morning.

While the movie is set to start at 10, doors will open at 9 a.m., Jennings said. He said there are no restrictions on who will be admitted.

“It’s completely open to the community,” he said.

With no tickets required this time, the seats will be available of a first-come, first-served basis, according to Jennings.

“We can seat roughly about 1,100,” he said.

Even if there’s an overflow crowd, this will be the last free showing hosted by the church, said Jennings.

The movie is rated PG-13, by the Motion Picture Association of America “for intense and bloody depiction of The Crucifixion, and for some sequences of violence.”

For those who feel parts of the film may be too intense for their children, an option is available.

“We will have another room set up for 3-year-olds to the third grade” where a children’s movie will be shown, Jennings said. King’s Church will have some child care workers in that room, he said.

“Son of God” is from the husband and wife production team of Mark Barnett and Roma Downey. It contains both new and previously filmed footage from the History Channel’s hit 2013 hit television miniseries, “The Bible.”

Starring  Diogo Morgado as Jesus Christ and directed by Christopher Spencer, the film lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Although only one free showing will be offered Saturday morning, “Son of God” will still be available for paid viewings at regular admission prices and at regular show times during the weekend and during the coming week.
