McAlester officer-in video firing a Taser at cuffed woman-in several assault and battery cases.

McALESTER — A McAlester police officer caught on tape firing a Taser gun at a handcuffed woman at point blank range- was a victim been in more than twice the number of assault and battery cases than his fellow officers.

In a June 24 video, officer Taylor Sterling is seen firing the Taser at point blank range at a handcuffed Nakina Williams after she spit at him.

The investigation continues on the case, according to McAlester Police Chief Jim Lyles.

Lyles said the District 18 District Attorney is working with the Oklahoma State Bureau of investigation on the matter and he will share the information once it becomes available.

“I know the DA is having the OSBI look at it,”  Lyles said Friday.

According to court records, there were 112 cases involving assault and battery on a police/peace officer filed in Pittsburg County District Court from November 1, 2000, to July 15, 2012.

Of those, 98 cases involved 69 different officers, an average of 1.4 times during the reported time frame.

According to court records, Taylor has been involved in 14 cases. That’s 10 times more than the average Pittsburg County Law enforcement officer.

According court documents, in a June 24th incident McAlester police officers Taylor and Roy Rogers arrested Williams for alleged public intoxication. She was taken by the officers to the booking desk at the Pittsburg County Criminal Justice Center.

After officers escorted Williams into the booking area, she engaged in a verbal exchange with officer Sterling as other officers stood by. She then appeared to spit at Taylor. That’s when Taylor pulled out his taser gun and, at a point blank range, shots Williams in the left breast, according to court documents and video footage.

Williams was charged and pleaded guilty to felony assault on a police officer, spitting on an officer, and misdemeanor public intoxication.

However this isn’t the first time officer Taylor has allegedly been assaulted, according to court records.
