The McAlester City Council met Tuesday night during a regular scheduled council meeting to discuss, among other things, supporting the national motto: In God We Trust.
“Consider and Act Upon, to adopt a resolution to support the display of the national motto ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ in a prominent location in the McAlester City hall or Council Chambers and authorize City Manager to order the display with a cost not to exceed $2,000,” is what the agenda item read.
Although everyone on the council seemed to be in favor of the motto, Council members Ward 1 Councilman Weldon Smith and Ward 2 Councilman Steve Harrison said the city should look for outside donors to fund the display.
After this thought was kicked around a bit, Ward 5 Councilman Buddy Garvin offered his support.
“If the council doesn’t want to pay for it, I will handle the expense myself,” he said.
Ward 6 Councilman Sam Mason also offered to pitch in on the display.
