Decision on municipality tabled-again

McALESTER — For the second time the Pittsburg County commissioners tabled a request to accept documents to create the first new municipality in Pittsburg County in decades.

The commissioners voted again to table the acceptance of the documents for municipality for Carlton Landing during Monday’s regular meeting the Pittsburg County commissioners.

Last week District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith said he wanted the issue tabled because it’s been decades since a municipality was formed in Pittsburg County he would like to have the district attorney’s office read over documents.

The documents were presented during last weeks meeting by Carlton Landing Developer Grant Humphries and Attorney Mike Oneil.

Carlton Landing a $20 million dollar planned community development in Lake Eufaula.

Oneil asked the commissioners during last weeks meeting to accept documents required by state statutes to create a new municipality for Carlton Landing.

Humphries said that Carlton Landing will not only be the first municipality created in decades in Pittsburg County it will also be the first municipality created in decades in the State of Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, although no one from Carlton Landing was at the meeting Monday, the commissioners had questions for the District 18 Assistant District Attorney Chuck Sullivan.

“ If it becomes a municipality is the public going to be able to pull up with flat bottom row boat to (Carlton  Landing’s) fancy dock? asked District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith.

Sullivan said that once its public they can’t restrict access.

Smith said he wanted assurance that once it’s municipality that it will be just like any other city in the county.

“I just want to make sure they know that if they are going the route of a municipality you don’t get to pick and chose the benefits of it,” Smith said.

Meanwhile Sullivan said he would issue a letter addressing the issues to the commissioners for the next meeting.

Also attending Monday’s meeting was District 3 Commissioner Chairman Ronnie Young.

Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
