Two firefighters fight not only fire but heat exhaustion

McALESTER — Two Krebs firefighters were sent to the hospital from suffering heat exhaustion Friday.

The first fire was called into the Krebs Fire Department at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to Krebs Fire Captain Stephen Dunbar.

Dunbar said the fire resulted in a total loss of an unoccupied home that was located north of McAlester on Lake View Road.

He said two fire trucks from KFD responded to the fire as well as three from Shady Grove, two from Alderson and one from Bugtussle fire departments.

He said firefighters were on the scene for two-and-a-half hours and an ambulance was called for one firefighter suffering from heat exhaustion.

The firefighter was taken to McAlester Regional Health Center and released, he said.

Dunbar said two KFD trucks arrived to assist McAlester Fire Department with a grass fire at D Street and Seminole Avenue in McAlester at approximately 7:30 p.m.. Friday.

He said KFD assisted MFD for approximately 45 minutes and when the firefighters returned to the KFD station one firefighter fainted from heat exhaustion and was transported at MRHC, treated and then released.

He said it was reported that MFD had to respond again to the grass fire at D Street and Seminole Avenue, because it flared back up again. He said when KFD had left the scene, there had been no reports of property damaged caused by the grass fire.
