JBCC inmate picked up on Highway 270

McALESTER — An inmate from the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center was picked up by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office on Friday evening.

Jeremy A. Russell, 21, was walking west on U.S. Highway 270 at around 8 p.m. Friday, according to Pittsburg County Undersheriff Richard Bedford. “A reporting person called the sheriff’s office ... he saw what looked like an inmate wearing his gray uniform turned inside out,” Bedford said. The sheriff’s department stopped Russell and representatives from JBCC picked Russell up at the scene just minutes later.

JBCC Deputy Warden David Wortham said although Russell was still on JBCC property, he was outside defined inmate boundaries. “He was on the north side of the highway walking on JBCC property, Wortham said.

Although Russell will not be criminally charged, he did receive an internal reprimand with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. “He is no longer here at JBCC,” Wortham said. “He’s at SHU.” Wortham said SHU is a segregated housing unit at the Howard McLeod Correctional Center in Lawton.

Russell is serving a five-year prison sentence for a 2011 Comanche County kidnapping conviction and a two-year term for a 2010 Comanche County conviction of second-degree burglary. He was convicted in both cases on Jan. 23 and has been in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections since May 3. He is set to be released Nov. 14, 2016, and has a parole hearing set in November.
