Computer glitch affects county schools to the tune of $400,000

McALESTER — More than $400,000 had to be repaid by Pittsburg County schools because of a county computer glitch, according to Pittsburg County Treasurer Donna Scrivner

She said 14 schools were affected.

The largest mistakes affected two schools.

Kiowa Public School was overpaid more than $246,000 and McAlester Public Schools was underpaid more than $199,000.

“Once we received the money we redistributed it to the schools that were underpaid,” Scrivner said.

The schools received the money based on their average daily attendance.

She said the mistake was discovered in May.

“We had call from a school who noticed their ADA payment wasn’t correct, so we looked into it and found that there were several schools that received the wrong amounts.”

On Monday she said all the money that was overpaid has been returned,

She said the over-paid money was used to repay the schools that were underpaid.

Other schools that were over-paid were Canadian, Krebs, Indianola, Frink, Tannehill and Haywood.

Other schools that were under-paid include Hartshone, Haileyville, Quinton, Crowder, Savanna, Pittsburg , Krebs, and Pittsburg.

Meanwhile, Scrivner said the computer problem has been fixed.

“We know what caused it,” Scrivner said.

“We also know how to check it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
