Sunday night severe weather downs a few trees, leaves area mostly unscathed

McALESTER — Pittsburg County is in the clear of severe weather for Sunday night, according to the director of McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management Trent Myers.

Frank Phillips, representative for Public Service Company of Oklahoma said as of 9:07 p.m. Sunday night, in Stigler, in Haskell County, there were 638 without power and 344 out in Talihina, in LeFlore County. However, there were no power outages reported in Pittsburg County.

Phillips said he had pictured a tree split in two and downed in McAlester by winds from Sunday evening’s severe storms.

Myers said he had one damage report of a fruit tree was blown down in Ashland by strong winds.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Pittsburg County and surrounding counties at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday and was to last until 10 p.m., then at approximately 7:45 p.m., warnings were issued for the area and was effective until 8:30 p.m.

At 8:30 p.m., Myers said Pittsburg County is in the clear for the rest of Sunday night and said he said he would keep the McAlester News-Capital posted as to any developing severe weather.

Through the night no severe weather was to be reported, but a large line of moderate thunderstorms rolled through the area earlier this morning.

Myers said that a McAlester resident called saying his rain gauge only held a half-an-inch of rain after storms went through. However, Myers said he did not have the official count of rain inches at the time this article was prepared for publication.
