Voters casting ballots in District 3 commissioner race, Carlton Landing elections today

McALESTER — Voters in Pittsburg County’s District 3 as well as those in the Carlton Landing development near Longtown were going to the polls today, Oct. 8, for two different elections, with some ballots already cast through in-person absentee ballot voting.

Polling places were set to remain open until 7 tonight for both elections.

Meanwhile, some voters have already cast ballots. A total of 47 in-person absentee ballot votes were cast Friday, while another 48 had been cast as of 5 p.m. Monday.

“It’s a pretty good turnout, but there are nine commissioner candidates and the Carlton Landing election,” noted Pittsburg County Election Board Secretary Cathy Thornton. She said she thought there would have been more votes cast at that point.

Those casting ballots in the District 3 Primary Election will choose Democratic and Republican candidates who will advance to the Nov. 12 General Election.

Voters in the Carlton Landing development will decide whether they will be incorporated as a town.

Only Democrats registered to vote in District 3 are qualified to cast ballots in the District 3 Democratic Primary Election for Pittsburg County commissioner. Likewise, only Republican registered to vote in District 3 are qualified to cast ballots in the GOP Primary Election for the District 3 post.

Voters in District 3 who are registered Independents or other recognized parties in Oklahoma will have to wait until the General Election in November to vote in the county commissioner’s race, when voters in District 3 will be allowed  to cross party lines

Although there are a total of nine candidates running in the primary, there will be no runoff because this is a special election.

Whoever is certified as receiving the most votes in the Democratic Primary election will move forward as the party’s nominee — even if there’s only a one vote difference.

The same is true in the Republican Primary Election, but there are only two GOP candidates in that race.

Meanwhile a number of the District 3 County Commission candidates got in a last weekend of campaigning Saturday and Sunday.

Republican candidates are Greg McNall and Miles Cathey.

Democratic candidates for the District 3 post are Donald Mathis, Kenneth Hall, Ross Selman, Trent Myers, Paul Watkins, Larry Partain and Jerry Donathan.

Following the Tuesday election, candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to either contest the results or contest the candidacy of an opponent.

If nothing is contested, election results are set to be certified as of 5 p.m. Friday, according to election officials.
