Siren testing set for Wednesday, weather permitting

McALESTER — Storm sirens are set for testing Wednesday in McAlester as well as a number of other Pittsburg County communities.

“We will be testing from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., weather permitting,” said Lois Lupardus, assistant director of the McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management.

“It will be the city of McAlester and sirens that can be controlled by the Office of Emergency Management,” including sirens in the communities of Haywood, Arpelar, Indianola, Shady Grove,  Bug Tussle, Alderson and Arrowhead Estates, Lupardus said, referring to locations of the sirens set for testing.

“And some of the other communities that have their own sirens will join us,” said Lupardus, referring to communities that control their own sirens, although she did not have a list available of any confirmations for Wednesday testing by press time.

Sirens were previously tested last month, but with the spring storm season, emergency officials want to make sure all of the sirens remain in working order.

Storm spotters were out during the Sunday evening  storm that swept through Pittsburg County, but did not see anything requiring the sirens to be sounded, Lupardus said.

While there were reports of strong winds, hail and rain, the local Office of Emergency Management had not received any damage reports as of near noon Monday, according to Lupardus.
