Six-decade tradition continues with Men's Holy Week Breakfasts

McALESTER — A tradition that’s been ongoing for more than six decades is set to continue in McAlester next week, with the 61st Annual Men’s Holy Week Breakfasts.

The tradition calls for a breakfast for men and boys to be held at a different McAlester church each morning in the week preceding Easter, with the breakfast hosted by one church and a featured speaker, who traditionally gives a brief presentation, from another.

All of the breakfasts are set to begin at 7 a.m., with the exception of the Saturday breakfast, scheduled to start at 8.

It’s not necessary to be a member of one of the churches involved to attend the breakfasts.

“We invite and all men and boys of McAlester and Pittsburg County,” said Bill McMahan, one of the organizers of the Holy Week Breakfasts.

“That’s what it’s all about. It’s a community affair, not a church affair.”

This year’s schedule is:

• Monday — First Christian Church, 300 E. Carl Albert Parkway, with church representative Bill McMaHan. Featured speaker is Tom Curtis, of All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

• Tuesday —First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Thirteenth Street and MacArthur Avenue, with church representative Steve Woodley. Steve Glazier, of the First Baptist Church, is featured speaker.

• Wednesday — All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 323 E. Washington Ave., with church representative John Goodyear. Featured speaker is the Rev. Anthony Washington, of Mount Triumph Baptist Church, serving  as guest speaker for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

• Thursday — St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 315 E. Washington Ave., with representative Al Ross. Tom Lackey, of First Presbyterian Church, is featured speaker.

• Friday — First Presbyterian Church, 222 E. Washington Ave., with church representative Pete Mills. Featured speaker is Chris Mills, of First United Methodist Church.
