'Tons' of items ready for Friends of Library book sale

McALESTER — McAlester Public Library Head Librarian Christine Sauro thinks this year’s Friends of the Library book sale could be one of the best.

“We have more books than ever this year,” Sauro said.

The Friends of the Library sale is Friday evening and Saturday morning in the gymnasium at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 318 E. Washington Ave.

A $5 admission will be charged for the Friday evening sale, which is set from 6-9 p.m. Admission is free for the Saturday sale, set from 8 a.m. until noon.

Sauro said a variety of books will be available.

“We’ve got a ton of biographies this time,” Sauro said.

“Children and teens will be able to find some of their favorite books too,” she said. “We have a lot of children’s books.”

Much more than books will be available.

“We also have a lot of multimedia: movies, audio books and even cassettes,” said Sauro.

Prices include $1 for hardbacks, 50 cents for small paperbacks, $2 for DVDs, 50 cents for VHS movies and a quarter for cassettes. Magazines will cost a dime.

“Prices will be posted all around,” Sauro said.

Putting the annual Friends of the Library book sale together takes lots of effort.

Carolyn Wright heads the Friends of the Library book Sale  Committee and has done so for a number of years, Sauro said, noting the work done by Wright and the other Friends of the Library members.

“We also get a lot of help from Jackie Brannon,” said Sauro, referring to inmates from the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester.

“They help us move the books from the library to the gym.”

Those who have items to donate to the sale can bring them to the gymnasium at St. John’s on Thursday, when volunteers will be setting things up in the gymnasium  throughout the day in advance of the Friday morning sale, according to Sauro.
