Livestock show begins at county fairgrounds

McALESTER — The 71st Annual Pittsburg County Junior Livestock Show has begun at the Pittsburg County Fairgrounds.

Some 42 goats, 61 swine and 54 cattle are entered this year, organizers say.

Thursday morning, livestock judge John Staude stood in the middle of a ring as local 4-H’ers showed their swine, circling the judge.

The arena was full of audience members who watched while Braylon Spears, a 4-H member from Hartshorne, was awarded a blue ribbon for his prize pig.

The show started Wednesday at 10 a.m. with goat and swine entries. Wednesday afternoon was the Judging of the Goats, Doe Show, Market Goat Show, Ewe Show and the Market Lamb Show.

Thursday’s Livestock Show events began at 9 a.m. with swine judging, Gilt Show, Market Swine Show, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Market Swine selection, Premium Sale selection and the Swine Showmanship contest.

Today at 8 a.m., the show continues with cattle entries followed by the Judging of Cattle at noon, followed by the Steer Show, including the Beef Showmanship Contest, the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steer selection and the Premium Sale selection.

Saturday, the All-around Showmanship contest takes place at 9 a.m. and at 6 p.m. the Awards and Presentation Ceremony begins, followed by the Premium sale.

Winners will enter their livestock into the Premium Sale which is held Saturday evening. During the Premium Sale the livestock is auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The proceeds from each sale are returned to the winner.

The show is free, open to the public and concessions will be available.
