Local non-profit seeks donations for the poor

McALESTER — The cold weather hits the poorest people hard this time of year, according to Shared Blessings Executive Director Scott Walker.

Shared Blessings in McAlester is a non-profit community ministry that distributes clothing, food, furniture, household goods and emergency funds to those in need.

With the cold temperatures the demand for heating assistance has increased, Walker said.

Shared Blessings is need of donations to help assist those need help paying their electric or gas bills and other needs, he said.

“We try to help as many people as we can depending on our budget,” Walker said.

Right now he said they can only help two or three families each week but the need for assistance is much greater. “It depends on the funds we have available,” he said.

“We meet with multiple people each week,” Walker said.  “It’s not easy to make the decision of who we can help but we can only help so many people.”

Each family must fill out an application and they go through an interview process before they are given utility assistance, he said.

“We also want to put the word out that we need blankets, socks and undergarments to give to people who come to us that are struggling in this cold weather.”

Donations can be accepted at Shared Blessings, 1558 S. Main St. or mailed to P.O. Box 328, McAlester.
