Hefley: More visitors than adoptions, reclaimed pets

McALESTER — Pittsburg County Animal Shelter Director Sandra Hefley gave her monthly report during Wednesday’s special meeting of Pittsburg County commissioners.

The special meeting held at the Pittsburg County Courthouse was re-set from its regular Monday day due to the area’s inclement weather, said District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith.

During the meeting, Hefley reported that 208 more people visited the shelter in January than in December. January had 650 visitors while the month of December had 442 visitors, according to

her report.

The report also states that in January, of the 234 dogs surrendered, 74 were adopted and 37 dogs were reclaimed.

The rest of the animals euthanized.

The report also states that of the 75 cats surrendered in January, 21 were adopted and two cats were reclaimed during month of January.

The rest of the animals were euthanized.

Also attending Wednesday’s meeting were District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers and District 3 Commissioner Trent Myers.

The Pittsburg County commissioners usually meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
