McALESTER — The McAlester Fire Department saves four in Monday morning fire — four puppies.

The first McAlester fire truck made it to the scene at 5:17 a.m. in response to a 5:12 a.m. call of fire at a home within the 700 block of East Delaware Avenue, MFD Fire Chief Brett Brewer said.

The heat lamp that was warming four puppies had caught their blankets a blaze and the fire spread to the home's porch destroying it, Brewer said.

The puppies made it out unscathed, Brewer said, but the porch was an approximate loss of $4,000 and although the fire never spread to the inside of the home, there was smoke that entered the home that caused some smoke damage.

Brewer said all together nine McAlester Fire Fighters responded, four small lives and a home was saved.
