The Polar Plunge is set for Feb.1 at the Stipe Recreation Center, 801 N. 9th St., organizers say.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the plunge begins at 11:00 a.m., according to Jennifer Lightle Special Olympics development director.
The Polar Plunge is fundraising event that challenges local individuals and groups to take a plunge into an ice-cold body of water to raise money in support of Special Olympic of Oklahoma athletes, Lightle said.
“Many Polar Plungers arrive in costume to make the plunge an even more fun event.”
Lightle said fundraising goals have been set for the event.
“The statewide goal for the 2014 Annual Polar Plunge is to raise $300,000 or more for Special Olympics Oklahoma; The goal for McAlester Polar Plunge is to raise $10,000.”
She said sign-ups will be taken the morning of the plunge at 10 a.m.
“It's only $75 to register and all of the money raised stays right here in Oklahoma to support programs for the 9,800 Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes.”
