Hartshorne begins day of car shows

The first of two major car shows in the McAlester area is set to jump-start in Hartshorne Saturday morning with the 17th annual Blue Mountain Cruzer Car Show.

A one-day event, the car and truck show is set to open at 8 a.m. and continue until around 2 p.m.

It will be held once again at the park near the city pool and former National Guard Armory building, at 12th Street and Carbon Avenue.

Organizers were working Thursday to wrap up the few remaining details for the show.

“It looks real good,” said Barney Rosso, one of the organizers of the event and a Hartshorne city councilman.

While there are registration fees for those wanting to compete in the car show, it’s free to spectators.

The show includes competition for vintage cars and trucks ranging from 1900 to 1990 models.

Classes include original and modified, muscle cars, street rods, Model As, Volkswagens, along with classes for motorcycles and special interest vehicles, according to Rosso.

Also on Saturday morning, breakfast will be available in the armory kitchen and dining room, organizers said.

In addition to food and drinks, plans call for music from the 1950s and 1960s to be played during the car show.

Awards will be presented to the top entries in each class, with prizes also presented for the early bird entrant, youngest and oldest driver, longest distance traveled and best of show.

Pre-registration has been $10 for those entering the competitions, with a $15 registration fee in place up until the cut-off time of noon Saturday.

To get from McAlester to the Blue Mountain Cruzer car show, head east on U.S. Highway 270 to Hartshorne. Continue past both traffic signals, then turn south on 12th Street.

Although Hartshorne and McAlester both are having car events on Saturday, they’re not considered in competition with each other, with one starting in the morning and the other beginning in the evening.

Instead, they compliment each other, as far as Rosso is concerned.

He noted that Hartshorne’s car show is set to end around 2 p.m. Organizers of McAlester Cruise Night said their event is set to start around 7 p.m. and Rosso figures that’s where a lot of participants in Hartshorne will be headed once the Blue Mountain Cruzer Car Show ends.

“They’re having a cruise night in McAlester and a lot of people will want to go over there,” he said.
