Eagle Scout revamps shooting range

McALESTER — A McAlester High School graduate recently revamped the McAlester Firing Range for his Eagle scout project.

John Ward, 18, of McAlester said he and several volunteers spent all day Saturday painting, cleaning and mowing the range.

They also did some planting and they replaced a long strip of rain-gutter that had been torn down.

John is the son of District 18 District Attorney Farley Ward and his wife Machelle.

He said for the last three months he’s been making plans gathering materials and taking measurements to complete the project.

‘I chose the shooting range because I know that many law enforcement agencies use it for classes, John said.

“I  thought I could help leave a good impression on them about our city if the range was improved.”

This summer John has been busy helping out on family ranch, planning his eagle scout project and planning for a big move — to Brazil.

John said he was recently accepted to complete a two-year church missionary trip to Salvador, Brazil where he will live and work while serving his church.

He said he’s still not sure yet of his plans once he’s back in the states.

“I’ll either attend the (University of Oklahoma) or (Brigham Young University). Right now I’d like to become a musical composer, John said. “But that could change in two years.”
