McAlester man turns self in, another found dead in July 4 Lake Eufaula boat accident

McALESTER — Officials say a McAlester man has turned himself in connection with July 4 hit- and-run boat accident that left one man dead and two children injured.

The of body Gary McIninch, 55 of Oklahoma City was found in 17 feet of water one mile east of Eufaula Cove and 400 yards north of the shoreline on Saturday, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He had been missing since the July 4 boat wreck involving three watercraft.

Ryan Shumway, 30, of McAlester, turned himself into the McIntosh County District Attorney’s office on Monday, OHP reported.

The OHP reported Shumway was aboard a 1999 Crownline ski boat with three passengers, including Janai Shumway, 32, and two children, ages 10 and 8, all of McAlester.

McIninch had disappeared into Lake Eufaula after he was ejected from a pontoon boat that was hit by a 20-foot ski boat traveling at an estimated 30 miles per hour, witnesses told police.

After hitting the pontoon, which had been carrying 10 people — including five children — the ski boat landed atop a nearby Stingray boat that had four people on board.

Witnesses told OHP the driver of the ski boat circled around and asked if everyone was okay and then left the scene.

Two children on the pontoon boat and a man were injured in the wreck. The two children were flown by medical aircraft to Oklahoma City hospitals, police said.
