Pittsburg County celebrates the Fourth of July

McALESTER — Independence Day in Pittsburg County means a full weekend of fireworks, rodeos, dancing, parades and lots of activities.

Here is a quick run-down on the Fourth of July events to look for.

• Kiowa will celebrate on July 5 with a fireworks display in the downtown area beginning at dark.

• McAlester will celebrate on July 4 at the Southeast Expo Center. with a live band, dancing, inflatables, concessions and fireworks at dusk.

• Hartshorne will not have fireworks this year but they will have their annual rodeo for three days starting Thrusday night beginning each night at 7 p.m. T

On Saturday a parade downtown in Main Street will begin at starting at noon, concessions will be available.

• Talihina today the Choctaw Nation Health Services will sponsor  the eighth annual “Boom in the Valley.”

— 5 p.m. — concessions and live music by “Straight Shot”

— 5 to 6 p.m. —5K Rocket Run registration

— 6:30 p.m. —5K Rocket Run

— 7 p.m. —Luksi (turtle) Races

— Dark— Fireworks

• Red Oak—Beginning today the town will celebrate its 14th Annual Independence Day Celebration with worship, a patriotic patriotic program and terapin races.

The terapin races will begin at 7 p.m. along with other childrens activities followed by fire works at dusk concessions will be available.

— Friday the Classic Co-ed Softball Tournament will be held at the Red Oak Softball Field and a pet parade which will begin at 7 p.m.

Several children’s activities are set including dog races, frozen t-shirt contest and others.

— Saturday  a free breakfast at the Red Oak First Baptist Church Fellowship hall is set from 8:30 to 10 a.m.

Also on Saturday is the 9th Annual Butterfield 5K Run.

Immediately following the Butterfield Run will be the Children’s Fun- K with prizes awarded to all children who participate.

There will also be free childrens activities at the Red Oak School cafeteria at 10 a.m.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as an arts, crafts and food sales will be held at the Red Oak School Cafeteria.

At 11 a.m. the Checkers Tournament will begin.

 A parade is also set for Saturday at 7:30. The line-up for the parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Red Oak gym parking lot.

At 8 p.m. the Annual Street Dance will be on the community center parking lot featuring Casey Covey from Wister will be the D.J. and furnish the music and lights.  In addition, a second street dance is set to begin at 10 p.m. featuring Marty Lloyd and“Barn Band”.

• Wilburton will celebrate on Thursday at Robbers Cave State Park, with entertainment, food vendors and inflatables for the children.

Fireworks will begin at dark at the park over Lake Carlton.

• Eufaula’s celebration on Thursday will begin at 3 p.m. and include a live band concessions, inflatables and fireworks will at the sports complex at the intersection of Indian and L Street, followed by Fireworks at dusk.

    Regular phone lines for the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Management were knocked out in the early morning hours Thursday, while about 18 inches of water flooded the OEM office under the Pittsburg County Justice Center.
