3 die in double semi tractor-trailer collision on Turnpike

An accident involving two semi tractor-trailers on the Indian Nation Turnpike near Antlers has left three people dead. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was initially withholding their names, pending positive identification of the deceased by the state medical examiner’s office.
The accident occurred around 1:11 p.m. Thursday .2 miles south of mile marker 14 in the northbound lane in Pushmataha County.
A 2004 Freightliner and 2005 Freightliner were both northbound in the right lane on the Indian Nation Turnpike, the highway patrol said. The driver of the 2004 Freightliner attempted to make a U-turn using a turnpike maintenance cross-over, according to the highway patrol.
The second Freightliner was unable to avoid the 2004 Freightliner and struck it, the highway patrol said. The 2004 Freightliner traveled north from the point of impact and came to rest in the center median.
According to the highway patrol, the 2005 Freightliner traveled north from the point of impact and came to rest, blocking the southbound lanes.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper David Vasquez investigated the accident, with assistance from Capt. Jerry Reagan, Lt. Robert Darst and troopers James McKee and Pat Funderburk, all of the OHP unit that covers the Indian Nation Turnpike. They were also assisted by trooper Josh O’Steen, of OHP Troop S.
