Crazy Days set for this weekend

McALESTER — DDowntown McAlester shoppers will get a break from paying sales tax on some clothing and shoes while they shop Hawaiian style on Aug. 3, according to Ginny Webb of McAlester Main Street.

The Oklahoma Sales Tax Holidays are Aug. 2—4 across the state.

That means no sales tax will be charged on certain clothing and shoes for three days beginning at 12:01 am on Friday and ending at twelve midnight on Sunday.

This includes state and any local sales taxes.

Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.

The sales tax holiday exempts the sale of clothing and shoes priced at less than $100 from sales taxes, according to tax.ok.gov.

To celebrate the holidays McAlester Main Street will hold a special Hawaiian Style Crazy Days event on Aug. 3 starting at 8 a.m.

“Business owners and employees will be dressed for a luau,” Webb said.

“It’s the no-sales- tax weekend and Downtown will be decked out Hawaiian style.”

And she said during the event shoppers can enter to win a treasure chest of gift certificates and merchandise from downtown merchants worth more than $500.

“Shoppers can earn one ticket for every $10 spent by 12:30 p.m.,” she said.

The drawing will be held at the Meeting Place at 1 p.m. and shoppers must be present to win.

She said merchants will be competing in a contest for the best costumes and window displays. The winners will be announced after the drawing.

“Sales will continue after the drawing, Webb said.

“So make a day of it in Downtown McAlester.”
