MPD promotes six in rank

McALESTER — The outlook is bright at the McAlester Police Department, even on a cold, cloudy day.

Six officers with the McAlester Police Department have been promoted, according to McAlester Police Chief Gary Wansick. Officer Kevin Hearod was promoted to captain; officer Brent McAlester made the rank of lieutenant; and officer Shawn Delana became a sergeant. These promotions were all effective Nov. 1.

Hearod said he was glad to get the news of his promotion.

“I was excited,” the new captain said. “I was working as a lieutenant over at the investigation division. Now I have to go back on patrol. You supervise a lot more people when you’re on patrol. It will certainly be interesting and more of a challenge. I’ll be back in a patrol car with the uniform on. When I’m not a shift commander, I’ll be just another cop. I’ll be making arrests, the whole nine yards.”

Wansick said a previous round of promotions had taken effect Oct. 1. Officer Greg Read earned the rank of captain; officer Kevin Bishop was promoted to sergeant; and officer Richard Parker was named lieutenant. Richard Bedford was also hired as a patrolman.

Wansick said the promotions were based on several different aspects. A written test comprises 60 percent of the score, while an oral board examination conducted by the chief, assistant chief and captains makes up another 20 percent of the score. The remaining 20 percent is based on past evaluations and seniority.

“I’m very pleased with all of the promotions,” Wansick said. “These officers are well-educated, highly-trained and hard-working. We are trying to be as open as we can at the McAlester Police Department. We want to be progressive and reach out to the community.”

Officer Jeremy Busby was named community service officer. Busby said he hopes he can reach out and help some areas in need.

“It’s a national program where we assist apartment buildings and other housing with multiple units in bringing down crime,” Busby said of the community service officer’s duties. “Right now we’re doing a kind of neighborhood watch. Our goal is crime-free multiple-unit housing in our city.”
