Old Town gets some Yucca

McALESTER — On Saturday several volunteers spent the morning painting and planting in an effort brighten up Old Town McAlester, according to Ginny Webb executive director of McAlester Main Street.

“We had a great turnout,” Webb said.

She of  22 volunteers spent more than a few hours painting flower pots bright green and then planting Yucca trees in the pots.

The pots were then placed along the sidewalk in Old Town. “The plants are very low maintenance and will be cared for by the Old Town merchants,” Webb said.

The Streetscape event was a success and it was a joint effort, she said.

“The Old Town Association provided the paint, Pride in McAlester provided additional supplies while Roy Engleman provided the use of his garage, and the Whistle-Stop Bistro served brunch to volunteers.”

Meanwhile Webb said a Downtown workday will be held on March 9 to paint streetlights and benches.

The next Streetscape committee meeting is set for Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room at McAlester City Hall.

The meetings and workdays are open to the public.
