Renovations under way on McAlester hospital's west wing

McALESTER — Some patients at the McAlester Regional Health Center will have a much larger shower space once extensive renovations are completed on the hospital’s west wing.

MRHC Director of Facilities Keith Mateychick outlined some of the renovations for the MRHC Trust Authority during the group’s April meeting, held Wednesday at the McAlester hospital. He later took several board members on a tour of the closed portion of the west wing, so they could see the work that is under way for themselves.

Twenty-four rooms are under renovation on what is called the 2 West section of the hospital, or the portion of the hospital on the far west wing of the second floor. A projected completion date is set for Aug. 1.

Some $345,000 has been budgeted for the project, with much of the work in-house —otherwise the project would cost much more, Mateychick said.

Renovations include knocking out inside walls, which Mateychick said opens up space and makes the rooms look larger.

“It doesn’t change the square footage, but it changes the perception,” Mateychick told the hospital board.

One of the most important changes is enlarging the shower area in the rooms, from approximately three feet wide, to five and one-half feet wide, he said.

“Now the nurse can go in with the patients and assist them,” Mateychick said, referring to patients who need help showering.

The new showers are also big enough for an emergency team to enter if it becomes necessary, he said.

August 1 is the scheduled completion date for the project.
