Council gives green light for Second Street project design

McALESTER — The city has hit another mile-marker in its Capital Improvements Road Project, this one involving Second Street.

City councilors unanimously approved a measure Tuesday night authorizing Mayor Steve Harrison to sign a professional services agreement with the engineering firm of Mehlburger Brawley to design road and infrastructure improvements for a segment of Second Street. Councilors took the action during their regular Tuesday night meeting at City Hall.

Plans call for the road to be reconstructed along a segment of South Second Street from Modoc Avenue to Comanche Avenue.

For design and consultant work on the project, city councilors authorized paying Mehlburger  Brawley a lump sum amount of $176,000.

In response to a question from Ward 1 Councilor Weldon Smith, McAlester City Engineer and Public Works Director John Modzelewski said the city staff recommended going with Mehlburger Brawley on the professional services agreement.

Cost of the project won’t be known until the engineering firm completes the design, according to Modzelewski.

Approval to sign the professional services agreement for the design of road and infrastructure agreements along  Second Street is the latest step in the series of  CIP road improvement projects, with financing authorized by a vote of the people in 2012 and 2013.
