McALESTER — McAlester High School Graduate Darren Jones,45, recently accepted orders as Commander in the United States Navy.
“I am proud to be from McAlester and proud to be from Oklahoma,” Jone said.
He is the son of Connie and Dan Wagoner of McAlester. “I am very proud of him,” said his mother a retired nurse for McAlester schools. Jones’s sister is Shelly Ray of McAlester.
Jones accepted his orders during a ceremony that took place on the grounds of Commander Naval Airforces Atlantic in Norfolk VA.
Jones said he graduated from MHS with the class of 1985 and married his wife Gina Jackson also from McAlester in 1991. The couple has two daughters Carson,15 and Cabe,10. He said met his wife will working for the city of McAlester as a lifeguard for the pool.
Prior to command, Jones will report to the commanding officer of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) a United States Navy aircraft carrier. Since commissioning, the USS Eisenhower has participated in several deployments including Operation Eagle Claw during the Iran hostage crisis in 1980, as well as the Gulf War in the 1990s, and more recently in support of US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Onboard the Eisenhower Jones wil be department head of the Aviation Maintenance Department.
