Rainbow temple rededicated

McALESTER — It was a colorful day in McAlester as Rainbow girls from 47 states came to help rededicate the Supreme Temple of the International Rainbow for Girls on Carl Albert Parkway.

Supreme Worthy Advisor Mary Adeline Bradford led the program.

“It’s a wonderful time to be a Rainbow girl,” Bradford said to a cheering audience of several hundred men and women.

The re-dedication of McAlester’s Rainbow for Girls Supreme Temple was held to celebrate the building being listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.

The building at 315 E. Carl Albert Pkwy. is called “significant in the area of social history as the world headquarters for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls,” according to Linda Ozan, public relations director for the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Ozan was at the ceremony and presented a certificate signed by Oklahoma Govenor Mary Fallin from the Oklahoma Historical Society

“This building is significant in the area of architecture as an excellent example of mid-20th-century, Moderne architecture and as the international temple for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls,” Ozan said.

Bradford said it’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by the society because the building itself has so much historical significance, not just for the organization but for the community.

Bradford said the building is important to the community and that the spirit of generations of Rainbow Girls could be felt within it’s walls.

She also gave a history of the organization’s founder the Rev. W. Mark Sexson who she said was ordained by God

She said the McAlester temple was originally opened and dedicated in 1951 by the Sexson a freemason who founded the organization in 1922.

She said the organization now has more than 10,000 members worldwide.

The temple serves as the central hub for IORG’s 850 Assemblies worldwide including 47 states and eight countries.

Bradford said the Rainbow for Girls organization is recognized around the world and in her travels as Supreme Worth Advisor, she has met families touched by the organization.

“We all have a common thread, we have all been touched by the Rainbow for Girls,” she said.
