McAlester man pleads guilty to federal firearms charge

McALESTER — A McAlester man recently pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge.

Bobby Joe Brown Jr., 52, of McAlester, pleaded guilty March 19 to one federal felony count of felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a press release form the United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Oklahoma, charges against Brown arose after an investigation by the McAlester Police Department, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, District 27 District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, Tahlequah Police Department, Muskogee Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Violent Crimes Task Force.

The January indictment alleges Brown had in his possession of Herbert Smith .22 caliber revolver on Aug. 20, the press release states.

Brown will remain in the custody of the United States Marshal Service pending sentencing, which will take place following the completion of a presentence report.

“The statutory range of punishment is a mandatory minimum of 15 years imprisonment and /or up to a $250,000 fine,” the press releast states.
