Krebs firemen fight house fire on Electric

McALESTER — Krebs firemen were called to fight a house fire early Friday morning at a residence on NorthWest Electric Avenue in McAlester, a home just on the cusp of Krebs and McAlester.

“The attic was completely involved when we arrived,” said Krebs Fire Chief Kevin Durant, whose face was covered with black soot and sweat. “I’ve been fighting fire all morning.”

Krebs Fire Department Chaplain Guy Shafer said the fire call came in at 4:44 a.m. and first responders arrived on the scene by about 4:47 a.m. “The whole family was home,” Shafer said. “Mom, dad, brother of dad and two teenagers and a dog.”

Although the entire family was home at the time the fire broke out, they were all able to get out of the house safely, Shafer said. “The Red Cross has been here,” Shafer said, confirming that the American Red Cross is doing whatever possible to take care of the family’s immediate needs.”

Shafer said the house is a total loss.

The fire started in the rear of the house, Shafer said, and by 9:30 Friday morning, firefighters were still on scene working and smoke could be seen rising from the back portion of the house.

Four local fire departments responded to the fire, Shafer said, including Krebs, McAlester, Alderson and Bugtussle. Responding from Krebs were 16 firefighters, three engines and a staff vehicle. Responding from McAlester were six or seven firefighters, Shafer said, and two engines.

Responding from Alderson were three firefighters and two trucks, Shafer said, and responding from Bugtussle were two firefighters and a tanker truck.

Shafer said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
