Summer’s hot spot to be operational

McALESTER — City personnel say the Chadick Park Wading Pool is ready to re-open again — for sure, this time.

McAlester Community Services Director Mel Priddy said late Wednesday afternoon that the city planned to re-open the wading pool at 10 this morning. The free pool’s regular hours are from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Last week, Priddy had expected the pool to re-open Monday.

However, additional glitches prevented that from happening and by Tuesday contract construction workers were smoothing out freshly-poured concrete that covered a panel inside the empty pool’s enclosed chain-link fence. Some of the newly-poured concrete went all the way to the pool’s edge.

By Wednesday morning, Certified Lifeguard Sarah Oley stood by as water poured from a pipe into the pool, filling it with water once more.

Although the pool soon filled, that didn’t mean it was ready for the children. Priddy said chlorine and other chemicals still had to be added and regulated.

“They were making sure everything was running OK and getting everything balanced,” Priddy said of the Wednesday activities. Once the chlorine balances are set, it’s s simple matter to check it every day; but since the pool had been empty for a week, they were basically starting from scratch, Priddy noted.

So are all of the leaks around the pool, some of which led to it being closed in the first place, finally repaired?

Well, not quite.

“There is actually still a leak close to the wading pool,” Priddy said. “We’re going to try and repair on Thursday.”

Not to worry, though, according to Priddy. He said he thought repairs could be completed without closing the wading pool, because it’s not the main supply line to the recreational site.

So after a week of having the pool closed, Priddy said “We’re glad we finally got it up and running.”

All of the children who have missed splashing in its cool waters are no doubt glad as well.
