A McAlester resident has been charged with a felony count of first-degree manslaughter in McIntosh County in connection with the 2013 death of an Oklahoma City man in a Lake Eufaula boating accident.
Ryan Shumway, 31, of McAlester, is accused of causing the death of Gary Lynn McIninch, 55, of Oklahoma City, in a July 4, 2013, boating accident a mile east of Eufaula Cove on Lake Eufaula.
Information filed in the case accuses Shumway of committing the felony while “engaged in the misdemeanor offense of reckless or neglectful operation of a vessel.”
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Shumway, is charged with a misdemeanor count of failure to give information and render aid “at a vessel accident.”
An initial court appearance in the case is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the McIntosh County Courthouse.
Two children were also injured in the 2013 boating accident.
Shumway had turned himself in to McIntosh County authorities last year two days after the body of McIninch was recovered from the lake.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said that McIninch had fallen into the lake after he was ejected from a pontoon boat hit by a 20-foot ski boat traveling an estimated 30 miles an hour, based on witness reports. After hitting the pontoon boat, the ski boat landed atop a Stingray boat that was nearby, according to accounts at the time.
The ski boat driver then drove away from the scene, authorities alleged. Shumway later turned himself in to authorities in McIntosh County.
