MRHC suffers communication outage

McALESTER — Saturday at approximately noon, McAlester Regional Health Center experienced a telecommunications and data center outage causing the hospital to implement an emergency services protocol, MRHC administrators said.

Senior Vice President Chief Information Officer Frank Hilbert said although the hospital’s land-line telephones and data center was down, the hospital was able to utilize handheld radios and cellphones to adequately communicate.

“No patient safety was compromised during the outage,” Hilbert said.

He said emergency services were on standby to transport patients requiring any radiology imaging to nearby hospitals.

MRHC usually is able to take radiology images and transfer them through their data center to radiology specialists located elsewhere, but without the data center up and running the hospital was unable to complete that process.

Hilbert said MRHC is investigating what caused the interruption

in services.

Emergency services such as the fire department and emergency medical services were notified and they formed a command center at the hospital, he said.

He said the emergency services did an excellent job and offered to help the hospital establish communications should it become necessary; the emergency protocol was executed flawlessly.

Hilbert said the MRHC data services and telephones were back online, and the matter was resolved, at approximately 7 that evening.
