Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive set for May 10

McALESTER — Pittsburg County residents can participate in the national “Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive” set for May 10, organizers say.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive locally benefits the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma in McAlester.

The food drive is the largest single-day food drive in the country, made possible by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, according to Maggie Hoey of the CFBEO office in Tulsa.

“Last year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected 9,367 pounds of food in McAlester, the equivalent of more than 7,800 meals for those struggling with hunger,” Hoey said.

Pittsburg County residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by leaving a bag of non-perishable food items by their mailbox by 7 a.m. on May 10 for their letter carrier to pick up, Hoey said.

Food donations can include items such as meals in a can (stew, chili, soup),tuna and canned meat, peanut butter, canned foods with pop-top lids, breakfast cereals, fruit juices in single serving boxes,

canned fruit packed in juice, canned vegetables.

She said the food will be picked up from households and businesses and delivered to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s southern branch in McAlester. The food bank will distribute the food to its local “partner programs,” including Salvation Army, Shared Blessings, Calvary Baptist, Big 5, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church and others.

Hoey said the CFBEO is the largest hunger-relief organization in eastern Oklahoma, bank distributing food through a network of 450 partner programs in 24 counties.

“These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, low-income after-school programs and senior citizen centers,” Hoey said.

“The food bank collectively provides more than 275,000 meals each week.”
