Filing period opens for Ward 4 McAlester City Council seat

McALESTER — Take the Ward 4 McAlester City Council seat — please.

That’s the wish of several McAlester city officials, who are hoping for the second time to get someone to file as a candidate as the Ward 4 McAlester city councilor.

A candidate filing period for the open Ward 4 seat began Monday and is set to continue from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Pittsburg County Election Board office at 109 E. Carl Albert Parkway, Room 101.

The seat has been vacant since the March 4 city election. Then-Ward 4 Councilor Robert Karr finished his current four-year term at that time. Karr did not seek re-election to the city council seat —but no one else filed to run for the office, either.

Since the next regular election for the Ward 4 city council  post is four years away, the rest of the city council is prohibited by the city charter from appointing anyone to the office. The city charter only allows that if the next election is a year or less away.

As result, city councilors passed a resolution setting another election for the post on the June 24 Primary Election ballot.

The election resolution states that  those who are eligible to file for the Ward 4 office are individuals who are “qualified electors of the city of McAlester, at least 25 years of age, who have resided in the city for at least two years, and have resided for a period of one year in Fourth Ward.”

Since the election is non-partisan, candidates do not have to declare a political party affiliation on order to run for the Ward 4 seat.
