Engineer firm re-hired for city stormwater permit

McALESTER — The McAlester City Council voted to pay no more than $40,000 to an engineering company to help the city meet  state requirements for its Stormwater Management Program.

The action happened Tuesday at a regular meeting of the  McAlester City Council at City Hall.

City Engineer John Modzelewski told the council that Mesheck and Associates was approved as the city’s Phase II Stormwater Management Program engineering consultant in July of 2008.

“The requirements of the first permit have been completed, and now the (Oklahoma Department of Environment Quality) is preparing the requirements for the next permit cycle,” Modzelewski said.

This agreement will allow the city to continue to be in compliance with (federal phase II permit requirements.) according to Mesheck and Associates Principal Engineer Brandon Claborn.

Claborn said the permit is required to dispose of stormwater waste and he said the process and the costs are basically an unfunded mandate that Environmental Protection Agency delegated to the state.

Also present at Tuesdays meeting was Mayor Steve Harrison, Ward 1 Councilor Weldon Smith, Ward 2 councilor John Titsworth, Ward 3 Councilor Travis Reed, Ward 4 Councilor Robert Karr and City Attorney Joe Ervin.

The council meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at McAlester City Hall.
