Trent Myers, Miles Cathey winners in District 3 commissioner primary

McALESTER — Trent Myers and Miles Cathey came out on top in the Primary Election race held Tuesday to name the Democratic and Republican nominees for the vacant District 3 Pittsburg County commissioner’s post.

Myers, who is the current director of the McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management, topped the seven-candidate field in the Democratic Primary with 346 votes.

Cathey, who is a current employee of Pittsburg County District 3, won the two-person GOP race with 71 votes.

Results will not be official until 5 p.m. Friday, barring any protests, according to the Pittsburg County Election Board.

The way things stand now, Myers and Cathey will face each other during the Nov. 12 general Election to determine who will become the new Pittsburg County District 3 commissioner.

Also, in the Tuesday election, voters in the Carlton Landing development in northern Pittsburg County, voted 16-to-1 to become a municipality.

In the crowded Democratic Primary, Myers came out 28 votes ahead of his closest competitor, Ross Selman. Since this was a special election, there will be no runoff.

Democratic Primary results, with the candidates followed by their vote totals, are:

• Myers — 346

• Selman — 318

• Jerry Donathan— 201

• Paul Watkins — 140

• Donald Mathis — 135

• Larry Partain — 78

• Kenneth Hall — 28

In the Republican Primary, Cathey outdistanced Greg McNall by 23 votes. Cathey received 71 votes, while McNall had 48.
