Great American Clean up starts this weekend

McALESTER — A local organization will begin a city-wide cleanup starting this weekend.

Pride In McAlester will begin the “Great American Cleanup” on Saturday according to Stephanie Giacomo executive director.

The PIM organization is a nonprofit group organized to “clean up and keep up the McAlester community for the enjoyment of residents and visitors,” according to prideinmcalester.com.

“This is a great way the citizens of McAlester to help clean up our community,” Giacomo said.

And she said volunteers needed.

The clean up is part of Keep Oklahoma Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup™ in Oklahoma, she said .

Beginning this weekend until April 27th on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 3 p.m. bulk trash, metal, tires and electronics will be accepted at the former National Guard Armory, located on the corner of 3rd Street and Taylor Avenue.

She said brush and yard debris will be collected at the McAlester landfill. The land fill is across from the Southeast Expo Center on Mitchell Road at State Highway 270.

She said bulk trash includes anything that cannot normally be placed in curbside trash for pickup.

She said electronics include such as old computers, televisions, printers, copiers, CDs, fitness equipment, cell phones, refrigerators, and “anything that runs on electricity.”

On April 27, the last day of cleanup, household hazardous waste will also be collected. Hazardous wasted includes items such as motor fluids, grease, auto batteries, fluorescent bulbs, antifreeze, flammable liquids, batteries, pesticides/herbicides, oil-based and enamel paints, household cleaners, lawn care products, pool chemicals, thermostats/thermometers and old ammunition.

Giacomo said water based latex paints will not be accepted because they are non-toxic.

“We recommend setting open cans (of water based latex paint) aside to let dry and then dispose cans in curbside trash.”

She said the clean up will help with health issues.

“Research shows that clean, litter-free environments encourage less litter, trash also creates health issues, such as tires in urban areas creating an environment for mosquito breeding and flushed medicine contaminating water supplies,” Giacomo said.

“Bring these unwanted items to armory and help keep McAlester clean and litter-free.”

She said the event is a PIM partnership with Neighbors Building Neighborhoods, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department, Allied Waste Services of Alderson, and the City of McAlester.

For more information on the clean up or to volunteer call 918-426-4444 or visit www.prideinmcalester.com.
