Man in Wilburton school incident in jail through weekend

McALESTER — A Wilburton man arrested in connection with a lock-down at Wilburton Public Schools on Friday remained in the Latimer County Jail on Monday afternoon.

William Ivey, 71, of Wilburton, had been arrested near noon Friday on an initial complaint of possessing a firearm on school property, according to Wilburton Assistant Police Chief Jeremie Green.

Ivey remained jailed without bail over the weekend.

Latimer County Assistant District Attorney Chris Henry said Monday he and  District 16 District Attorney Jeff Smith along with First Assistant District Attorney Marion Fry were staffing the case.

He said they were determining if charges should be filed by the district attorney’s office against Ivey; if so, what charges should be filed; or if no charges should be filed and Ivey should be released from jail.

Authorities said Ivey might make a court appearance Monday, although it was not certain.

Wilburton police had been contacted around 10:45 a.m. Friday and told a man with a gun was near the school.

“We got a report of an individual walking in front of the elementary school with a rifle,” Green said.

Law enforcement officers from a number of agencies rushed to the scene. Some formed a perimeter around the building while others went inside to make sure the school was secure, according to Green.

Other officers checked buses to make sure the subject had not hidden in one of the vehicles, Green said.

Along with Wilburton police, others responding to the call on Friday included the Latimer County Sheriff’s Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Choctaw National Tribal Police and the Eastern Oklahoma State College campus police, according to Green.

Although  police did not find the subject on the school grounds, they were able to identify him through a cell phone photo taken by an individual at the school, Green said.

When police saw the cell phone photo, they recognized Ivey, he said. They found him at the residence of a friend who lived about two blocks from the school, according to Green.

Ivey had been carrying a pellet gun, Green said.

Police had said they found no intention as of Friday that Ivey had intended any harm.
