Actress takes a break to help 'Take McAlester Back'

McALESTER — English-born singer and actress Victoria Summer said she’s glad to help with the Take McAlester Back project — so much so that she took time to travel to the city to perform a concert before completing her new movie.

Summer spoke with the News-Capital on Friday afternoon, prior to her Saturday night concert at the First Christian Church in McAlester.

Her scheduled accompanists included violinist Michael Ginsburg, Grammy-winning drummer David Teegarden Sr. and on guitar, McAlester Mayor Kevin Priddle.

Take McAlester Back is a group dedicated to getting “drugs out and the arts in.” As part of that philosophy, Ginsburg put together the group to perform at the free concert.

Summer’s an ambassador for a group known as the Foundation For A Drug Free World. When Ginsburg told her how Take McAlester Back is associated with the arts, Summer agreed to the Saturday night performance.

“I really want to support the campaign,” she said. “I think it’s a fantastic idea.”

“It’s important that people have a sense of community,” said Summer, who said she’s glad to participate in a social event as well.

Summer arrived in McAlester on Thursday. She rehearsed with Ginsburg and Priddle on Friday afternoon,  and the three planned on another rehearsal with Teegarden, who was set to arrive in McAlester on Saturday.
