McAlester man accused of hanging family dog

McALESTER — A McAlester man is accused of hanging his family dog.

Thompson Brown Jr., 29, of McAlester, was charged Aug. 1 in Pittsburg County District Court with one felony count of cruelty to animals.

According to court records, McAlester police were dispatched July 31 to a home in the 300 block of East Washington Avenue regarding a dog that had been hung.

Upon arrival, police found a dog hanging from its blue leash, which was attached to a clothes line pole, a police affidavit states. Brown’s nephew, Donell Ayers, told police he had attempted to stop his uncle from hanging the family dog several times earlier that day.

Ayers told police he had to go to school, so he asked his neighbor to keep a watch out, the affidavit states, but when Ayers returned home from school, he found the dog hanging in the back yard.

Police interviewed the neighbor, as well as Brown, and arrested Brown and transported him tot he Pittsburg County jail, where he remains in custody in lieu of a $5,000 bond. He was unavailable for comment at presstime.

If convicted, Brown is facing up to five years in prison for the cruelty to animal charge and up to life in prison for previous theft convictions. He is due back in court Friday at 9 a.m.
